YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Dunedin Young Women’s Christian Association was held last evening, when the president (Mrs C. M. Begg) presided over a large attendance of members and friends. Prior to the commencement of the business meeting a short religious service was held. ' ANNUAL REPORT. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet the president said that during the year there had been a number of changes in the staff, but the work had been carried on well and had not gone back in any department. — (Applause.) The Women’s Auxiliary had had a prosperous year, and had been of great assistance to the association. It was hoped to' extend this organisation to every suburb in the city, and thus increase public interest in the work of the association. Dealing with the extent of unemployment among girls, the speaker said the association had taken a special interest in work among these girls, and had endeavoured to give them a training which would enable them to take advantage of chances when they came their way. It was hoped that the classes for the girls would become more known and, as a consequence, better attended. In conclusion the speaker said it was impossible to thank all those who gave of their time to help the association in its work. In every department it was only necessary to ask for assistance, and it was immediately forthcoming. The motion was seconded by Mr J. Sutherland Ross, who said that as a member of the advisory board he had been, in company with others, asked to give advice on financial matters. It had been necessary to try to cut down expense. The board had gone into the matter of expense, and was satisfied that the association was being conducted ns efliciently and economically as possible. It was thought, however, that perhaps a little too much money was being sent out of Dunedin, but he understood that Something was to be done regarding this in the future. The speaker paid a tribute to the work being carried out by the association among unemployed girls. A pleasing feature, he said, was that no less an amount than £34 had been returned by girls who had been assisted by the association financially after they had obtained employment. This was particularly satisfactory in view of the fact that the totul amount spent by the association in this way last year was £134. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBERS. The following new members were elected to the board of directors:—Mesdames Blackmore and H. Price, Miss L. Sullivan and Dr Elizabeth Gregory. The following board members were re-elected; —Mesdames H. K. Wilkinson, C. Barrowclough and Miss Ross. BUDGET ESTIMATES. The budget estimates for the coming year were presented by the secretary (Miss D. H. Lynn), who dealt with the anticipated revenue and expenditure for each department and explained the various items in detail. It was stated that the budget deficit, as estimated at the presentx time, was £535 9s lid, which was £24 less than the estimated deficit for last year. Various suggestions were made by the speaker for reducing _ this amount by organised efforts for raising money. GENERAL. The president appealed to those present to try and obtain now members for the association, and asked for support for the efforts which were being made to raise money. A comprehensive vote of thanks to those who had assisted the association during the year was carried. At the conclusion of the annual meeting a short birthday party was held at which a large birthday cake was cut, the candles being lighted by the chairwomen of the various departments and by past presidents. Two short plays entitled “Followers” ancj “Spanish Love Song” were presented by the Girl Citizens and the Kimi Federated Club respectively.
