CONDITIONS IN SYDNEY
A SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM WORST OF DEPRESSION OVER. Mr George Black, manager in Dunedin of Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., who has just returned from a visit to Sydney, states that the outstanding impression he received was the general feeling of optimism and cheerfulness among the people. It really did one good to encounter this spirit, he said. There was also a general feeling that the worst of the depression was over, but this was not always endorsed by those behind the political scenes who had a knowledge of the financial obligations which New South Wales had to meet. The Stevens Government had a full sense of its responsibilities, and was doing its best to meet its difficulties. If it were allowed to remain in office, Mr Black said he was satisfied it would continue to do good work. The State had been suffering to some extent from drought conditions, but if rain fell the country made such a quick response that there would be a considerable improvement in the conditions. Wool would not, however, be of such good quality as the clip of last year and there would also be a shortage in the quantity. It was further anticipated that there would be a drop in the export of lambs. The stock market in Sydney itself was showing an improvement. Mr Black stated that oranges were very cheap in Sydney and its environs. Many of the orchardists had stalls placed at their gateways, and they did a good trade with passing motorists. For a shilling 24 of the best quality oranges could be purchased from these stalls, and in Sydney the price was 12 for a shilling- , - Mr Black stated that he had wonderfully fine weather during his stay in Sydney and that the bright sunshine no doubt had a lot to do with the cheery outlook of the people.
