THE ROAD TO MILFORD SOUND

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —We were told a few days ago that construction on the Milford Sound road is to be accelerated. It will be nice to have a road to Milford Sound, but 1 wonder why it is that nobody asks if such a road vill pay? That would be the first question asked about a railway, no matter where. The economics of a railway between Napier and Gisborne or between Christchurch and Blenheim are exhaustively gone into, but a road could be started to the top of Mount Cook and no one would bother about the economics of the proposal. Is there any explanation of this, plausible or otherwise? —1 am, etc., Railroad. September 12.
