LEAGUE FOOTBALL

KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION WON BY CITY In the final of the Otago League’s knock-out competition, City secured an easy win from Pacific, and was declared the winner. Christian Brothers met with weak opposition in the game against Athletic, and quickly compiled a big score. Both games were played on the Oval on Saturday afternoon, and the standard was ’ not very high. It was a strenuous contest between City and Pacific, and tempera were somewhat frayed in the second spell, when the referee ordered Reid, a Pacific forward, off. The players wore white armlets as a mark of respect to the president of the league (Mr W. Holloway) in the death of his wife. CITY v. PACIFIC The teams were as follows; City.—C. Hayden, N. Barbara, R. Ravenswood, T. Nelson. W. Richards, W. Williams, J. Ginders, W. Bartholomew, W. Heller. F. Heller, C. Bowers. J. Currie, F. Grenfell. Pacific. —M'Lennan, de Courcey, Blackwood. Foote, Bryan, Reid, Astor-Harrison, MTndoe. Mason, Burns, Steffans, Duncan. The game was very even in the opening stages, neither side gaining much advantage. The City forwards then took a hand, and Pacific was on the defence for some time. A strong run by F. Heller was the next incident of note. He boat several opponents, and had almost a clear run in, but was well tackled by M'Lennan. City kept up the pressure, and in a scramble near Pacific’s line Williams went over. Barbara was successful with the kick from a wide angle. City bad the better of the subsequent play, and a rush by the forwards ended in Bartholomew scoring in a good position. Barbara was again successful with the kick.' Immediately afterwards Ravenwood secured and passed to Ginders, who sent the ball on to Barbara, the lastnamed scoring at the ebrner. The try was not converted. The score at half time was: City 13 points, Pacific nil. The Pacific backs were prominent in passing movements after the game was resumed, and play was in City’s territory until Bartholomew broke away. He kicked past the Pacific full-back, and beat him for possession to score near the posts. Nelson converted. A loose rush by Pacific immediately afterwards placed City on the defence. Blackwood picked up, and beat Hayden, to score a fine try behind the posts. Foote made no mistake with the kick. A fine passing movement was started by Ginders, the ball going, to Raven wood and Barbara, the last-named being brought down, by Bryan when close to Pacific’s line. At this stage there was an argument amongst several of the forwards on both sides, and Reid was ordered off. The Pacific eido was further weakened through Blackwood being injured. City again attacked, end Grenfell scored wide out. Barbara failed with the kick. A Pacific forward rush in the last minute ended in Duncan scoring at the corner. Foote failed with the kick. The final scores were: City ' ... 21 points. Pacific .... - • 8 points. Mr A. Eckhoff was referee.

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS v. ATHLETIC The teams were as follows: — Christian Brothers. Pollock, Reid, Lemon, Walsh, Schmelz, O’Malley, B. O’Connor, A. Culling, G. Wilson. Montague, T. O’Connor, B. Gray then secured and made a strong run, but his pass went astray. Arandale repeated the movement a minute later, but he also sent out a bad pass. Some up and down play followed, the Greens having the better of the exchanges. A passing movement by the Green backs a few minutes later ended in' Schmelz scoring at the corner as the result of weak tackling. Montague converted from the side-line. Athletic had a brief respite, but play soon returned to the other end, where O’Malley secured and cut in to pcore behind the posts. Montague converted. A minute later Schmelz sent out a pass to O’Malley past halfway and he cut through the opposition to score an easy try, which Montague converted. Half-time was then called, the score being: Christian Brothers 15 points. Athletic nil. Athletic penetrated into the Green’s territory after the resumption, but.play soon returned to halfway. After Montague and 'F. Culling had made strong runs to Athletic’s line, Schmelz secured and went over for an easy try, Montague adding the extra points. Play returned to past halfway, where Loades kicked a goal for Athletic from a penalty. Harwood and Munro made good individual efforts, but received no support, and two certain tries were lost. A rush by the Green forwards, led by E. O’Connor, gained ground. The ball went out to Schmelz, who scored near the posts. Montague again converted. The Greens had their opponents on the defence until the end, and in the last minute Reid scored for Montague to kick his sixth goal. The final scores were:—

The Auckland representative League team defeated Taranaki by 25 points to 17 in the presence of about 2000 spectators. It was a bright exhibition in which the scores scarcely represent the quality of the teams. Territorially Taranaki had the advantage, but it was not until the second spell that the home players were able to finish off their movements. Auckland soon took the lead and led by 14 points to nil at half time, most of the scoring movements starting from behind halfway. Auckland again scored on resuming and then Taranaki took charge and carried the score to 22 to 12 in favour of Auckland. Cowley, one of Taranaki's best backs, suffered a broken leg, and as a result the team was thrown out of gear. IN OTHER CENTRES (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 5.
