RETURN TO DARK AGES
NEW GERMAN DECREES THE AXE FOR EXECUTIONS (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright.) i BERLIN, August 3. Captain Goering has decreed that the guillotine shall be replaced by the axe for execution, except where the rope or rifle is specifically indicated. The decree declares that the axe is the surest means of killing. It has never given rise to objections. Captain Goering has also decreed an alteration in the prison regulations, introducing real Prussian discipline, whereby, according to Nazi newspapers, prisoners serving hard labour will not be housed in comfortable heated cells, with running water, decorated with pictures, allowed to smoke, road newspapers, keep canaries, see films, and make outdoor excursions in charge of warders, but will have to face severe punishment, with bread and water, in a dark cell, with chains on their arms and legs, in the event of infringement of regulations. The Nazis believe that this drastic punishment will make prisoners cautious before committing further crime in order to secure readmission to the comfortable homes which the prisons have been under the Socialists.
