GAELIC SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING. The Returned Soldiers’ Association hall could scarcely accommodate the members and friends who attended the monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society last evening. Chief A. M’Lachlan and Chieftains William K. Cameron, A. Matheson, C. Macdonald, A. M’Lcnnan and M. MaeKenzie were led to seats on the platform to the stirring music of the “ Phiob Mor,” played by Piper Peter Davidson. A Highland welcome was accorded Captain Gillias, of the Alynbank, and Mr Duncan, who in a few appropriate words thanked the society for its kindly welcome. The newly formed nucleus of a Gaelic choir was in attendance, and under the conductorship of Mr R. Scott sang “ Fear a Bhata ” and “ Gaol Nam Crunneag.” The rendering of these old Gaelic airs was all that could be desired, and when it has a full complement of singers the choir should give a good account of itself. The vocalists for the evening programme were Miss M'Gregor, “ My Ain Folk ” and for an encore “ For the Sake of Somebody ”; Mr Simpson, “ Bonnie Wee Thing ” and “ I Heard You Singing ”; Misses R. and N. Shrimpton, duets, “ 0 Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast ” and to an encore “Turn Ye to Me”; Chieftain A. M‘Lonnan, Gaelic songs, “ Nighean Bonn ” and “ Eileann Mo Gaol ”; Master Claridge, “ Robin Adair ” and “ Ave Maria ”; Mrs Oliver, “ Granny’s Highland Hame ”; Mr Robert Scott, “ The Standard on the Braes of Mar ” and “ Macgregors Gathering,” ; Miss Shrimpton, “ Within a Mile of Edinburgh Toon ’’ and “ Coming Through the Eye.” Miss Colina Bain danced the seann truibhais, Master Jack Miller the Irish jig, and Miss Colina Bain and Master Jack Miller the double fling. Miss George and Mrs Matheson played the accompaniments, and Mr Alex M'Kenzio was M.O. for the dance which followed the musical programme.
