MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society was attended by the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (chairman), Mrs Stanley Batchelor, Sliss Rattray, Miss Graham, Messrs E. A. Rosevear, C. V. Smith, J. W. Smeaton, and J. G. Jeffery. A letter was received from the Patriotic Association advising that an adjustment had now been made in regard to assistance to two ex-soldiers, special cases. —Noted, with thanks. A letter was received from the medical superintendent, Seaclitf Hospital, thanking the society for what it had done for ex-service patients. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote thanking members of the Red Cross for visiting Wakari Hospital, and supplying the soldier patients with comforts. Members of the board greatly appreciated the continued interest taken in the men at Wakari. Reports from headquarters showed that good work continued to be done by the Red Cross nurses in the various provincial districts. Senior and junior classes in first aid, nursing, etc., had been well attended, and good results achieved. Best thanks are due to all those ladies who have helped in any way towards the success of the classes and circles. Advice, and any possible assistance, had been given in a number of cases of sickness, and junior members had also had pleasure on occasion in helping in this connection. Headquarters wrote stating that Dr Colquhoun, who had ably filled the position of Red Cross Commissioner, London, and acted as the society’s delegate to the Council of the League of Red Cross Societies, Paris, had, for health reasons, tendered his resignation. The New Zealand Executive had conveyed to him the following resolution:—“This meeting of the Dominion Executive receives with regret the resignation of Dr Colquhoun, Red Cross Commissioner in London and delegate to the Council of the League of Red Cross Societies, and desires to place on (record its very warm appreciation of his services. Further, it is concerned regarding his indisposition, and conveys to him best wishes for a complete restoration of health and strength.” Members warmly endorsed the executive’s resolution, and Mrs Stanley Batchelor was deputed to convey personally the committee’s sincere appreciation.
A satisfactory report was received from Mrs Batchelor and Miss Graham regarding visits to, and comforts supplied to soldier patients at Dunedin and Wakari Hospitals. The matron reported that four patients had been admitted to Montecillo, and two discharged. There were 17 patients now in the home. The staff was doing good work, and everything about the home and property going along smoothly. The patients were very pleased indeed to receive a number of gifts sent up by friends. The secretary reported a donation of £s_ from George, H. Scales, Ltd. (Scales Line Steamers). —Received with thanks.
