CORSICAN BUSH FIRES

VILLAGERS IN FLIGHT DESTRUCTION OF FOREST. PARIS, July 23. The inhabitants of many villages in Corsica have been compelled by forest fires to abandon their belongings and flee for their lives. The bush fires have been raging for five days. More than 8000 acres of forest have already been destroyed. The fires seem to have started through spontaneous combustion owing to prolonged tropical weather. At first little attention was paid to them, but a stiff breeze sprang up, causing the fires to spread very rapidly. The united efforts of fire brigades and inhabitants have failed to arrest their progress.
