Mr T. A. Kinmont returned to Dunedin by yesterday’s express from a business visit to Napier. Mr Paul Vinogradoff travelled by yesterday’s express to Christchurch^ Mr H. L. Gibson, district traffic manager for the Railways Department at Dunedin, travelled by yesterday’s express to Christchurch.
Mr R. Adamson, of Oamaru, is at present in Dunedin. The Rev J. C. Harknees, who has been on a visit to Wyndham, was a through passenger by yesterday’s express on his return to Hampden. The Rev. Father M'Gettigan proceeded to Cromwell yesterday, where he will take the place of Father Graham, who has been temporarily laid aside through illness.
The Countess of Orford, who went to England after the death of the Earl of Orford at Manurewa in September, 1931, returned to Auckland by the Rangitane on Wednesday, accompanied by her daughter, Lady Ann Walpole. The countess has taken up her residence again at Manurewa House. Her plans, are not definite at present, but she proposes to remain in New Zealand at least until after Christmas. Mr C. W. Earle, C.M.G., managing director and editor of the Dominion newspaper, will relinquish the latter position towards the end of the present year, but will continue to act as managing director. Mr Earle (says a Press Association telegram) has been editor of the Dominion since its foundation in 1907. Mr J. H. Hall, editor of the Sun, Christchurch, hag been appointed to succeed Mr Earle as editor of the Dominion. Word has just been received in Tiinaru that Professor Cecil Malthus, an old boy of Timaru Boys’ High School, and a graduate of Canterbury College, has been granted a doctorate of literature for a thesis, written in French, on the influence of Shakespeare on the French dramatist and poet, Alfred de Musset. Dr Malthus is professor of modern languages at Hobart University. Mr A. J. Dixon, sub-inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, who has retired after more than 46 years’ service was entertained by the head office stair and suburban Wellington managers and presented with a wireless set. Mr Dixon joined the service of the bank at Ross. He -was formerly manager at Markin, Nanier, and Gisborne, going from Gisborne to the head office in August, 1929.
