PUBLIC EXPENDITURE
MINISTER’S CAUTIOUS POLICY NO PROMISES TO DEPUTATIONS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 3. Since lie was raised to Ministerial rank when he took the portfolio of Minister of Public Works, Mr _J. Bitchener has not given aiy promises in reply to deputations to spend large amounts of money. He has followed the same policy while temporarily holding the portfolio of Minister of Education. Mr Bitchener explained his policy in this connection when replying to ‘ a deputation of the District High School Committtee at Methven ■yesterday. If he made promises to authorise expenditure, he said, he might later have to shatter the hopes which he had built up by telling them that Cabinet had not approved of expenditure in their case. He would go into the matter with the officers of the department and see what could be done.
