ALLEGED COMMON ASSAULT

SHIP’S FIREMAN CHARGED

VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY.

(Per United Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, August 2. A verdict of not guilty was returned by the jury in the Supreme Court to-day in the case of Robert Adams, ship’s fireman, aged 30, who was charged with common assault. The case arose out of the recent chipping strike. It was alleged that the accused went into a restaurant and struck a man in the face with a plate. Giving evidence, Adams said he saw a crowd of men outside the restaurant, and was told by them that there were scabs inside. He said he knew the proprietor and would go in and see him. As he was coming out of the restaurant the smash occurred, but he had no hand in it. .
