PALMERSTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, July 5. DEDICATION. At the. Church of Saint Mary on Sunday the Rev. C. Melville Newton will dedicate church ornaments to the memory of the late Mrs Ellen Pickett. OBITUARY. The. death occurred on Saturday last, at the age of 80 years, of Mr Edward Thomas Jones, one of the early settlers of the district. Mr Jones left England for New Zealand in 1872 by the Charlotte Gladstone, and landed here early in the following year. A companion and close friend on the voyage was Mr W. H. Hopkins, ex-Mayor of Palmerston. The deceased, who was of a retiring disposition, spent nearly ail his life in the Dunback district, adopting the occupation of a nurseryman. About 1874 he married a daughter of the late Mr George Cockerill, of Macraes, but his wife died before the end of the century. In 1908 Mr Jones married Mrs Elizabeth Wood. He is survived by three daughters (Mesdames J. Pollock, Oamaru; J. Fibbee, Wellington; arc! A. Harris, Dunedin) and one son (Mr Edward Jones, Dunback). The funeral took place at the Palmerston Cemetery yesterday.
