MURDER AND PIRACY
ON CHINESE-OWNED VESSEL A REMARKABLE STORY (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SHANGHAI, July 1. (Received July 2, at 7 p.m.) A remarkable story of murder and piracy on the high seas comes from Dairen. A few days ago a Chineseowned steamer left Tientsin with a Russian* Captain Vikman, commanding. The passengers were five men, who said they were of German nationality, and, snmediately on entering the open sea, the passengers are said to have murdered the captain and his wife, together with seven of the Chinese crew, taking control of the vessel, in which they planned to cross the Pacific and gain some American port. Needing additional provisions they put into Hoshigaura, near Dairen, but bad navigation put the ship ashore. The murderers absconded, but later three were arrested, and the hunt is being continued for the other two.
THREE MEN ARRESTED. , SHANGHAI, July 1. (Received July 2, at 8 p.m.) The pirated steamer is the Chinese vessel Shen,, which was bound from Tientsin to Shanghai, carrying general cargo. The five men were given passages after stowing away for about 200, miles from Shanghai. Japanese police arrested Captain laud in and two of his German compatriots, Schuler and Beeton. Two others, Gauch (a Swiss) and Muller (a German) escaped, but their capture is certain. They intended, after provisioning at Darien, crossing the Pacific and selling the ship and cargo for 110,000 dollars.
