MUNICIPAL ORGAN RECITAL
The municipal organ recital which was given by the city organist (Dr V. E. Galway) in the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon was not as well attended as is usually the case, the bright sunshine probably having the effect of keeping many patrons out of doors. The recital, from a musical point of view, was undoubtedly one of the most successful to date, the programme being a particularly fine one. Dr Galway’s items included three of outstanding interest in the Bach Fugue in D Major, in which the organist displayed brilliant technique and clever pedal work, Elgar’s Sonata in G Major, which is an excellent example of modern organ music, and the Finale of Wagner’s "Rhemgold.” John Irelandis “The Holy Boy ” and a melody ’by O’Connor Morris 'were pleasing examples of the newer type of organ composition, and other items were the overture to Handel’s “ Athaliah,” Edgar Ford’s Symphonic Paean and a Berceuse by Greig. The assisting artist was Mr G. W. Johnstone, who was in good voice in Handel's “ Silent Worship,” Schubert’s “ Wanderer’s Night Song,” Brahms’s “ Sunday ” during the first part of the programme. Mr Johnstone’s numbers in the second half were “Have You Seen But a Whyte Lillie Grow ” (Dolmetsch). “At the Mid-hour of Night” (Old Irish). "As Flora Slept” (A’Beckett Williams), and “Cubhin Rushes” (Stanford). The accompaniments were sympathetically played by Miss Rona Thomson.
