A NEW CHAMPION
HEAVY-WEIGHT BOXING CARNERA DEFEATS SHARKEY (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) NEW YORK, June 29. Camera knocked out Sharkey in the sixth round for the world’s heavyweight boxing championship. Camera is the first Italian ever to appear in a bout for the heavy-weight title. Camera weighed 18st 8 Jib and Sharkey 14st 51b. Camera won the first round and Sharkey took the second. The champion continued his advantage in the third round, reaching hia opponent repeatedly with blows to the head and body. The Italian fought back savagely, but his blows were wide. In the fourth round the champion was outboxiug his opponent, who was repeatedly warned for holding and hitting in the clinches. The Italian’s massive arms were like a shield and difficult to penetrate. The fifth round was marked by a scorching right hook by Sharkey to Carnera’s jaw, shaking the challenger. The Italian now began to rush the American with determination. At the bell Sharkey still led. In the sixth round Camera rushed upon Sharkey and drove him hard about the ring, clubbing lefts and rights to the head and blocking the American’s returns with ease. In a clinch on the ropes Sharkey missed his footing and slipped to _ his left knee as Camera landed a light right upper cut. The champion went down, but arose before the count could be begun, apparently unhurt. Camera resumed his chase of his opponent, and then apparently from nowhere he pulled a terrific right uppercut which landed flush on Sharkey’s chin. The blow snapped Sharkey’s head back and sent him down, and he was counted out with his face on the ring floor. The champion was carried to his corner, his manager excitedly demanding that Camera s gloves be examined. A semi-hysterical scene ensued in the ring, where spectators leaped in, but order was soon restored. The round had lasted Imin 47sec. When Sharkey and Camera met previously Sharkey won easily on points, with the Italian almost out on his feet. , It was stated at that time that Camera had shown gameness, but he lacked the idea of how to punch correctly and to make the most of his terrific strength. Sharkey will be 31 years of age in October, and Camera 26 in the same month. Sharkey was the loser of the final of the heavy-weight elimination ‘ contests for the world’s championship against Max Schmeling in 1930 on a foul in the fourth round, but subsequently he turned the tables on Schmeling, though many American critics considered that Schraeling was unlucky to lose. The general consensus of opinion seems to be that Sharkey has gone back a long way since the days when he gave Dempsey such a hard battle, and by many the recent Max Baer-Max Schmeling contest was regarded as being of more importance than the present Sharkey-Carnera match.
