DUNEDIN ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY
For Mr Alfred Walmsley’s last concert as conductor of the Dunedin Orchestral Society a popular programme has been arranged. The concert will be held in His Majesty’s Theatre this evening. The orchestra is playing very well at present, and is at its full strength. Mr Walmsley’s' favourite composer, Mozart, is represented by his beautiful overture to “ II Seraglio,” while Haydn’s “ Clock ” symphony, with its delicate and charming orchestration, should prove a great favourite.' Mendelssohn’s “ Son and Stranger " overture is very interesting, being one of the happiest examples of this composer’s writing. A gift to the society by Miss Stella Bayley, “ Valse Lyrique,” by Sibelius, will be played for the first time by the society, and the melodious “ Les Huguenots ” selection is a number that will appeal to all, its stirring brass passages and the opportunities for the fipe body of strings in this orchestra making it a most effective item. The soloists are Miss Dorothy Mackay, whose dainty singing -should be very effective in two Hebridean songs; Miss Ruth Sell, a very fine contralto, who will sing two negro spirituals; Mr- E, Ottrey, the promising young baritone, whose choice, ‘The Windmill,” is an excellent one; and Mr David Whisker, the brilliant flautist from the Sydney Conservatorium, his selection being a Russian Romance. Miss Mackay and Mr Alfred Walmsley will combine in the melodious and attractive duet from the first act of Carmen, “ Speak to Me of My Mother,” a simple number that is a welcome change from the more robust style of operatic selections.
