FIRES

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) - GISBORNE, June 26. The homestead of Mr Lawrence Je£ Blake, of nine rooms, at Wamgake, was totally destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. Only a few personal ettects were saved. ■, MOTOR VAN DAMAGED. At about 5.30 last evening a motor•delivery van, owned by Messrs W. MConnell and Sons, grocers, of King Edward street, .caught fire, and was badly damaged before the Fire Brigade could extinguish the blaze. The fire occurred at the corner of Forbury road and Bay View road. AUTOMATIC FALSE ALARM. The City Fire Brigade turned out earlier in the day also, but the call proved to be an automatic false alarm from Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs s premises. BLAZE AT WAIPAHI. STORE AND RESIDENCE DESTROYED. A store at Waipahi, with residence attached, the property of Mr P. H. Jones, Waipahi, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The building was leased by Mr C. V. Thomson and sublet as a residence to Mr James Branks, butcher. About 2.30 a.m. Mr Branks found the kitchen ablaze, and called some neighbours. A few articles were saved, but little could be done to save the furniture or the building. The building was erected in 1877 by the late Mr William Muir, of Clinton, for Messrs Garden and Young. Mr Branks's furniture was insured in the Guardian Office for £75 and the building was insured in the State Fire Office.
