POPULAR CRICKETER

ALLEN AT LORD’S

CROWD’S CORDIAL RECEPTION.

LONDON, June 6,

The great reception accorded G. O. Allen at Lord’s yesterday by the WhitMonday cricket crowd of 20,000, may not be the only sequel to his Australian successes.

It is understood that Allen is favoured for the captaincy of England against the Australians in 1934. Allen is well liked by the Marylebone committee, which realises his popularity with the Australian players and public.

Allen had intended to concentrate on business this year and play only on the Whitsuntide and August bank holidays, but he has now joined a firm of stockbrokers. This will enable him to make more frequent appearances this season, with unlimited cricket in 1934.

Allen is known to be strongly resentful of the criticism of the Australians, whom he has vigorously defended in the frequest attacks he has encountered since his return. He continually reminds the detractors that he is Australianborn.
