AMATEUR CYCLING

ULTIMATUM TO FEDERATION (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 16. A letter haa' been forwarded by th« Cycling Council to the New Zealand Cycling Federation, Christchurch, which th« council desires to be accepted as its considered opinion, and in the nature of an ultimatum. Failing acceptance of the proposals, which the letter contains,’'the council will recommend amateur cycling bodies throughout New Zealand to persist in seeking separate recognition, and in the meantime to disregard the federation. The letter says (inter alia): "With regard to the future, unless, and until, something is agreed _to which, in the opinion of this council, would make the administration of amateur cycling satisfactory, it does not intend to co-operate with the federation. The council is of opinion that a serious mistake was made by the Union Gycliste Internationale when it applied to New Zealand the conditions that apparently rule in other, and larger, countries—that one body should control both professionals and amateurs. The amateur cyclists in New Zealand did not ask for it. and did npt want it; and so far as is known the professional section also did not want it. Two years’- trial of the system has now been given, and, in the opinion of the council, it has been found wanting.” The letter suggests the lines, however, of which retention of supreme control by the federation might be secured.
