THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 1862.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

We understand that arrangements in course of progress, are almost completed, for levelling Bell Hill. The difficulty hitherto has been the arranging with the holders of property there, hut this it appears is likely to be satisfactorily The wires and insulators for the electric telegraph between Dunedin and Port, Chalmers arrived from Melbourne, by the “.City of Hobart,” and it is understood that they will be erected very shortly, and that if the office were ready the line might be open within a week. It will be seen by our Port Chalmers report that the gale which has been blowing so heavily for the last three days has done some damage in the port 'by sending vessels on to the sand banks, and in one instance on to the rocks. The vessels on the shoals are the Sea Breeze, the Rebecca, the Eucalyptus, and the Omega, and the Fox is on the rocks. Several others dragged , their anchors. The Daniel Watson went ashore, hut was got off without damage. The Electors of Hobart Town would seem to rival those of Dunedin in their, apathy in respect to elections. At a recent election for the city of Hobart Town only 929 persons voted out of 3172 electors on the roll. The proprietor of the Hawke’s Bay Herald has issued a. circular addressed to the Maori chiefs, offering to establish a newspaper which is to be, “in one sense, the natives’ own. That is to say, it will be a reflection of their own views and opinions, and will not be under the influence of any government or party.” It will be wholly in the Maori language; or partly English and partly Maori as may_ be desired by the subscribers, th« preliminary condition being that 100 per r sons of the native race each subscribe £7 per annum, and pay 10s. down.
