RIVER DAMMED

“LANDSLIDE” OF LIME BERLIN, June 9. An accident, susceptible of producing far-reaching and disastrous results, occurred near Latdorf, in the vicinity of the city of Dessau, Central Germany, when a large quantity of lime, which had accumulated at the pit-head of a limeworks, fell into the River Saale, thereby completely obstructing the bed of the river, the level of which rose nearly two feet in a few minutes. A whole district was menaced by the flood, and large quantities of fish were destroyed owing to the pollution of the water by the lime. Hundreds of unemployed became busy in endeavouring to facilitate the river’s outflow. The accident is attributed to heavy rain during the last 48 hours.
