\ IMPRISONMENT FOR DEBT
SUPREME COURT TO DECIDE
(Pee United Peess Association.) AUCKLAND, June 15,
Mr Justice Reed, on Friday, in the Supreme Court will be called on to decide whether a Chinese now in Mount Eden gaol is Willie Tong or Tai Sing. To-day the judge heard an application for a writ of habeas corpus, and granted a rule nisi calling on the gaoler to produce the body of Willie Tong at court on Friday, and to show cause why he should be detained.
Last year judgment was obtained against Tai Sing for debt, and in February the magistrate fixed tli£ penalty, in default of payment, at 10, days’ imprisonment. It is now alleged that the papers were served on Tong, who took no notice of them until last month, when realising the seriousness of his position, he applied for a rehearing. Tins was refused by the magistrate, on the ground that judgment had been obtained against Tai Sing. On Monday a Chinese who claimed to be Tong was imprisoned.
