COST OF COMMUNICATIONS PLEA FOR REDUCTION. LONDON, May 31. Lord Inverforth, president of Imperial Communications, Ltd., on rising to speak at the Royal Empire Society’s luncheon to-day, was handed a note from Sir Archibald Weigall, the chairman, reading, “Cannot you make it cheaper, than £2°a minute, with a three minutes’ minimum, for a telephone call to Australia ? Lord Inverforth did not attempt to reply, hut Senatore Marconi, the principal guest, had earlier confessed that the radiophone cost seemed unduly high. He believed that technical improvements and perfection of organisation would enable a progressive lowering of charges to be made. Professor E. V. Appleton, in emphasising the value of Imperial cooperation, said that reflected waves in the northern hemisphere came down like a left-handed corkscrew, while Australian scientists had discovered that polarisation in the southern hemisphere was right-handed, thus providing invaluable data. Sir Archibald Weigall referred to the value of wireless in Empire building, particularly in outback Australia.
