IMPERIAL EX-SERVICEMEN

On Saturday evening at Lake’s Restaurant an enjoyable soldiers’ smoke concert was held. There was a good attendance and great enthusiasm and comradeship was in evidence. The programme opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem, and the chairman (Mr L. G. Lilly) then proposed the toast of “ The King.” “ His Majesty’s Forces of-the Crown ” was proposed by Mr Bishop and acknowledged by Commander Watson- and Major Mead, Mr Watts proposed “ His Worship the Mayor and City Fathers.” In responding. the Mayor, in humorous vein, re--counted some of his experiences as a padre, and assured the members that he was always pleased to rote the activities of ex-soldiers’ clubs and associations. To the toast of “ Kindred Associations,” given by Mr Moss, replies were made by Mr Duncan, on behalf of the South African Veterans’ Association, Mr F. Forrester, for the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Assor ciation, and Mr Barton,' for the Australian Imperial Forces Social Club. “ Fallen Comrades ” were remembered by all those present standing in silence. A very enjoyable musical programme was provided by Messrs Benton, Bishop, Abbott, Carpenter, Wilkinson, and Adlard. Several soldiers’ choruses were heartily sung by all those present. Mr M'Millan acted as accompanist. The evening closed with the singing of the National Anthem at 10.45 p.m.
