PORT CHALMERS NEWS

RELIEF WORKERS Next Sunday evening the Port Chalmers Band, assisted by a number of local artists, will give a performance in the Laurier Theatre in aid of the Relief Workers’ Fund. An attractive programme of musical and instrumental items will be provided, and as the object is a worthy one a large attendance is expected. WELSH RUGBY PLAYER • Mr T. W. Smith, chief officer of the Cardiff steamer Helmspey,, which is at present loading scrap metal at Port Chalmers for Japan, was a noted Rugby footballer in the early part of this century. He was a member of the combined Glamorganshire team which played against the famous All Blacks during the English tour in 1005. Mr Smith retains vivid and pleasant recollection of the All Blacks, ; and when presented with a picture of the team by a Port Chalmers resident was able to name every man without looking through the list of names. I PORT CHALMERS BAND The Port Chalmers Band held a solo competition in the Druids’ Hall on Saturday evening, when more than 200 supporters of the band were present. The president (Mr W. G. Love) was chairman. * The A section competition for medals presented by Mr I. Peters was won by I. Gray (euphonium), with J. Dcnsem (baritone) second. The B section contest was won by W. Wade (tenor horn), with P. Wheeler (tenor horn) second.

Mr J. Dixon, conductor of the St. Kilda Band, judged the competitions. He congratulated the players on their performances, and at the same time gave them some useful advice on solo and baud playing. , Mr L. F. Smith, who presented the medals for the B section 'contest, also congratulated the players. During the evening Mr Dixon was presented With an illuminated minute from the members of the baud in recognition of the keen interest he has taken in the combination since its inception. At the conclusion of the competitions a dance was held. Four additional medals have been presented by Port Chalmers residents for a solo competition among members of the band. The contest will be held before the end of the year.
