The largest dam in the Biitish Empire will be finished by September, 1934., It is the Mettur dam in Southern India. Some astonishing figures concerning it have been published. The contents will b« 54.000,000 cubic feet—the largest block of masonry in the world. The cement alone cost £700,000. There will be * waterfall of 95ft over a width of 630 ft. Work is now being pushed on rapidly, both at the headwords and along the course of the- distributory system. Th« dam will make a million acres of lan# fertile by irrigation.
