DRINKING IN CABARET
MAN AND WOMAN CHARGED MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS. In the Police Court at Auckland last Thursday morning Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., gave another warning to those who take liquor with them to cabarets. Grace Mills, aged 25, and Graham Arthur, Williamson were each charged, on summons, with unlawfully consuming liquor in the Peter Pan Cabaret on March 8, at a time when licensed premises were required to be closed. Mr Duggan appeared for both defendants, who pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant, M'Hugh said defendants went to the cabaret at 9.30 p.m. on March 8 and remained there until 11.30. While on the way home in a motor car they were questioned by Sergeant Dunn, and admitted that they had had liquor at the cabaret.
- Mr Duggan said both defendants went with a party to the cabaret, the liquor being taken there by others in the party. Detective Sergeant M'Hugh: In a statement which he made and signed he admitted taking liquor there. Counsel pointed out that this case occurred prior to the warning issued by another magistrate a fortnight ago, when a young woman was before the court on a similar charge. Mr Hunt: I issued a warning two years ago about liquor being taken to cabarets. I said then that the first man I had before me I would fine.
Mr Duggan, in extenuation, said that had not defendant made a voluntary statement to Sergeant Dunn the charge might not have been brought. Williamson was not in any way intoxicated.
The magistrate convicted and discharged the woman. “It is a scandal to take liquor to cabarets, or even to be present when young . women are having liquor at these places,” he said. He fined Williamson £5 and costs, and told him he ought to be ashamed of himself. The magistrate refused an application by counsel for an order for the suppression of Miss Mills’s name. “As soon as people know they must not take liquor to these places, the better,” he said.
