ALEXANDRA NOTES
(From Ode Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, May 11. Winter has now set in and conditions remain very cold. Rain has fallen during the last few days and snow to a good depth covers the surrounding hills so that early frosts may be expected. Pastoralists on the high country are having a busy time removing sheep to the lower levels. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The sixth annual meeting of the Alexandra District Horticultural Society was held recently. The president (Mr C. B. Sorrell) presided over a good attendance. Presenting the annual report and balance sheet the president referred to the very satisfactory state of the society’s affairs, notwithstanding the fact that the credit balance had been reduced from £52 13s 4d to £27 4s Gd. This was offset somewhat, he said, by the fact that £ls 2s had been spent in staging alone. The president thanked the many citizens who had assisted with money and special prizes, and also the judges. He paid a tribute to the excellent work performed by the secretary (Mr W. R. Mechaelis). The election of office-bearers resulted as follows Patron, Mr R. Jopp; president, Mr C. B. Sorrell; vice-presidents— Messrs R. S. Kinnaird and H. P. Cowie; secretary, Mr W. R. Quail and duck are reported to be very plentiful this season and some good bags have been reported. One party of two guns were successful over the weekend in bagging 72 quail. They are, however, keeping the locality a secret. P.W.M.U. CONFERENCE. The half-yearly conference of delegates from the various branches within the Central Otago Presbytery was held at Alexandra on Thursday. Mrs J„ Dewar presided and 44 delegates were present. The president extended a welcome to Sister Jean Porteous, secretary of the Dunedin Prcsbytcrial Association. The main business was the question ot forming a separate presbyterial association for Central Otago. Sister Porteous fully explained the requirements for such a project. Opinion respecting the proposal was fairly equally divided and it was eventually decided again to report the matter back to various branches and endeavour to reach finality in November. Sister Porteous gave a very interesting address on the formation of the Dunedin association in 1905 and outlined the rapid progress it had made. The thanks of those present were expressed by Mrs Dewar. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs W. H. Hinton left Alexandra yesterday to join the Maunganui at Wellington, en route for Tahiti. Mr J, W.
