(From One Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, May 12. The local Scottish Society held piping and dancing competitions last night. Chief David Ross presided, and there was a good audience. There were a number of competitors and others interested from Dunedin., Messrs R. Cameron and J-Gor-don judged the piping and Messrs D. M. Thomson and 6. Ross the dancing. Results: — ~ Piping.—Marches (five entries): W. Budge 1, A. M'Millan 2, K. Cameron 3, Strathspeys and Reels (four entries): A. M'Millan 1, W. Budge 2, K. Cameron 8. Dancing—Highland Fling, under 13 years (14 entries): N. Marshall 1, A. Stewart 2, M. Baxter 3. Sean Truibhais, under 13 (11 entries); N. Marshall 1, A. Stewart 2, N. Baxter 3. Sword Dance, under 13 (12 entries): M. Baxter 1, A. Stewart 2, W. Thomson 3. Highland Reel, 13 and over (eight entries): Miss P, Atkinson 1, Miss N, Hodge 2, Miss J. Baxter 3. The Palmerston Collie Club concluded its annual trials to-day in weather which, though cold, was slightly more favourable than that experienced on the nrst two days. The results are as follows: — MAIDEN and OPEN HUNTAWAY and SLEW between three sets of flags. Total points, 56.
Open Huntaway.—A. T. Miller’s Byd, 54J point*, I; O. Smith’s Stan, 64 points, 2; C, Smith’s Joe, 52/ points, 3; J. Anderson’s Flag, 60 points, 4; A. Matheson s Vale, 48J points, 5. There were 30 entriea, ' , Maiden Huntaway.—E. Dunstan s Don, 24 points, 1; D. Ross’s Glen and A. MWean’s Bess, 14 points (equal) 2; P. Walker’s Paddy, 11 points, 4. Local Event.—Hunt sheep round a pole about 200 yards away, bring back, and yard. Total points 43; Hugh Rosss Roy, 37 points, 1; A. MWean’s Bess, 36 points, 2; B. Callaghan’s Gale, 33J points, 3; D. MunroV May, 30 points, 4. There were 14 entries. The class of work in the Open Head was very good in many cases, only halt a point separating the winners. Some runs were disappointing, due to the open class of the ground. The dogs generally were in good command. Some veiy fine work was seen in the Huntaway. Conditions were made more difficult by the sheep bolting away when released from the pen. The sheep proved very suitable, showing practically no signs oi weakness. . Special Prizes.
