Ministerial. The Prime Minister (Mr G. W. Forbes) yesterday visited Massey College and inspected the work being carried out there. He later proceeded to Wellington.

Mr D. M'Dougall, M.P, for Mataura, arrived in Dunedin by the express from the south last evening.

Mr A. S. Cookson, secretary of the Otago Employers’ Association, returned from Christchurch yesterday afternoon. Mr H. M. Maekay, managing director of New Zealand Airways, Ltd,, left yesterday for Christchurch to attend the South Island Air Pageant, Mr J. A. Fleming, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, left on Friday morning by aeroplane for Central Otago. The Rev. W. H. S. Hine, vicar of Fortrose, - has been appointed to the charge of the parochial district of Winton. , Mr ,L. D. Grigg, accompanied by his wife and family, left yesterday for Wellington, en roilte to Melbourne, where he proposes to settle. Mr John Murray, commissioner of stamp duties, who has been on a visit to Dunedin, was a passenger for Christchurch by the second express yesterday. The members of the Arbitration Court (Mr Justice Frazer and Messrs W. Cecil Prime and A. L. Monteith) returned t° Dunedin last night from Invercargill, and sittings will be resumed on Monday. Mr Ronald Chamberlain, M.A., Mus. •Bac. (Cantab), F.R.C.0., A.RA.M,, has been appointed examiner in music and elocution (Trinity College pf Music, London) throughout the South Island, and is due at Christchurch on August 10, Accompanied by the club’s ground engineer (Mr A. W. Burbidge), Flight-lieuten-ant Olson, pilot instructor to the Otago Aero Club, will leave this morning by plane for Christchurch to attend the South Island air pageant. Miss,Nancy Rowntree, who will have Mr E. Moen with her as passenger, will also fly one of the club’s planes to' Christchurch this morning. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr H E. Holland) arrived from the north by the second express last evening. Mr Holland tvill open the Industrial Exhibition at the Drill Hall this afternoon, and will deliver an address in the Town Hall tomorrow evening. He will return north on Monday morning. Mr W. A. C. Smith, M.Se., who received his primary and secondary education in Southland and is at present taking an- advanced course in mathematics at the Otago University, has received advice that he secured first place for New Zealand in honours mathematics and has been awarded the Book Memorial Prize in mathematics. This prize, which represents books to the_ value of £5, is awarded to the student gaining highest marks for New Zealand in honours mathematics, provided a sufficiently high standard is' attained. Mr Smith was the only student in New Zealand at the last examinations to secure a first-class .pass in mathematics in his class.

Members of the tramway staff met recently in the Social Hail to bid farewell to Inspector J. J. Golden, who was retiring on superannuation, The tramways manager (Mr W. H. Mackenzie) occupied the chair. The chairman, on behalf “of the whole staff, presented Mr Golden with a, well-filled wallet, a case of pipes, and a tobacco pouch, and wished him many years to enjoy his well-earned rest. The chair? man, who has been associated with' Mr Golden for the past 35' years, spoke very highly of the manner in which that officer had carried out his duties, and gave some amusing incidents of the early history of the tram service, Mr Golden, in responding, thanked 4he chairman for his kind remarks and the staff for their handsome presents. He regretted having to sever his connection with the tramway department, but the superannuation scheme inaugurated by the City Council had made his retirement much easier.
