NEW AIR STATION
SHIP IN MID-ATLANTIC. The 5000-ton steamer Westfalen, which has been chartered by a German firm to serve ns a floating air station in the middle of the South Atlantic, has been completely reconstructed. She successfully carried out her trials near Bremcrhaven recently. With her help a regular weekly postal service is to be established which will bring Rio de Janiero within four days and Buenos Aires within five days of Berlin. Aeroplanes will be used between Berlin and Cadiz, seaplanes from Cadiz over the Canary Isles to British Gambia, from where large transoceanic planes will set out for the Westfalen in mid-ocean. The Westfalen will haul the machines on board with a crane over the stern, refuel them, and then shoot them from a catapault in the forepart of the ship. The transoceanic service by aeroplane, carrying mails and freight, is to be fortnightly. In alternate weeks the Graf Zeppelin will carry passengers as well as mail and freight. The airship will not, of course, require the help of the Westfalen. The Westfalen will have the advantage of being able to move from her station in order to go to the help of seaplanes that may be forced down.
