HEAVY FROSTS IN BALLARAT. POTATO CROPS DAMAGED. MELBOURNE, ApriJ 4. So severe have been the frosts in the Ballarat district recently that it is estimated that about £60,000 worth of damage has been done to potato crops. EVASION OF SALES TAX. HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. PERTH, April 4. Twenty-six charges of having evaded payment of the sales tax , under the Sales Tax Assessment Act were admitted in the Police Court. The charges were against Sara and Cook, Ltd., a wholesale firm, and John Stephan, ■ manager of the firm. The fines totalled £2096. THE TRADE NEGOTIATIONS. CANBERRA, April 4. (Received April 5, at 0.15 a.m.) Mr J. G. Latham, Acting Prime Minister, replying to a question in the House of Representatives to-day* said that although it 1 was quite natural that New Zealand desired the removal of the potato embargo, Mr Massy Greene had not entered into any agreement which would bind the Commonwealth Parliament and no agreement with the Dominion in respect to any Item covered by the tariff would be made without submission to Parliament. Mr Latham emphasised that the potato embargo was a quarantine restriction, which was among the subjects discussed In New Zealand.
