OTAGO RUGBY UNION

MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union was held last evening, Mr J. Mitchell presiding. Others present were: Messrs S. G. Styche, H. Harris, T. O’Shea, C. Sonntag, VV. Glengarry, D. M. Stuart, V. G. Cavanagh, D, C. Jolly, 1. Grant, A. C. Haynes, J. B. Wootton, A. H. Cameron, VV. Pearson, T. Corten, W. E. Bagley, A. J. Haub, W. Alexander, Douglas Spedding, and Dr Perry and Dr Harty. Mr E. S. Wilson was re-elected as secretary at the same remuneration as last year. Committees were appointed as follows: —Flag Committee —Messrs 1. B. Wootton, A. C. Haynes, and T. O’Shea; Works Committee—Messrs D. C. Jolly, Graft. Porter, Jolly, Bagley, and Dr Harty; Finance Committee —Messrs Douglas Spedding, H. Harris, D. M. Stuart, V. G. Cavanagh, J. B. Wootton, and S. G. Styche; Carisbrook Committee —Messrs Harris, Cavanagh, D. Alexander, and C. Sonntag; Correspondence Committee —Messrs Harris and Spedding; Reinstatement Committee — Messrs Harris, Spedding, and Stuart. The appointment of an Appointments Committee was held over in the meantime.

It was decided to ask the Flag Committee to present a report at next meeting dealing with flag competition rules for the coming season. It was decided to write to the various clubs requesting that senior teams should indicate whether they were prepared to play at 1.30 p.m. at Carisbrook if required. The matter of employing gatemen for the coming season was left to the committee, and the question of ground and complimentary tickets was referred to the Finance Committee. Arrangements were made for applications to be lodged for various grounds for the coming season. Arrangements for the supply of balls to schools in sub-union and local districts wore made on the same basis as last year. The secretary was instructed to arrange for the conference between primary and secondary schools on the matter of the use of grounds for match and practice purposes. The secretary reported that the New Zealand Council would meet on May 4, and the appointment of delegates from Otago was deferred until April 24. It was resolved that- clubs be asked to furnish nominations for appointment to the Junior Selection Committee. Caretakers for the various grounds were appointed, all last year’s appointees being aproved, on the same terms as last season, pending the report of the Works Committee. Transfers were approved as follows: — D. G. Heggio from Southern to Pirates, G. Simon from Zingari to Union, H. Madigan from Southern to Zingari, F. S. Shanks from Training College to Southern, T. S. Watkins from Kaikorai to Zingari, H, Cullen and J. Cullen from Kaikorai to Alhambra were granted. L. F. O’Regan's transfer from Dunedin to Alhambra was approved to take effect from June 19. It was agreed that the Reserves Department of the City Council should be asked to furnish a sub-committee to visit the various grounds with a committee of the union with a view to the proper conditioning of the playing areas. The two grounds most in need of improvement were said to be Montecillo and Opoho. The Alhambra Club was granted the use of' Carisbrook Ground on Easter Saturday for the annual match with the Merivale (Christchurch) Club. It was reported that a conference was held last week between representatives of the Otago sub-unions. It was recommended that an Otago sub-unions team should meet a Southland sub-unions team at Dunedin at the end of July or early in August and that the Southland Union be asked to fix the date. It was suggested that a First Grade game should be played as a curtain raiser. It was recommended that the Otago sub-unions team should be selected in the same way as last year, one selector from each sub-union to meet at a centre. A suggestion that the selection be made at Roxburgh was approved. The Dunedin Club was granted the nse of Carisbrook on Tuesday and Thursday nights for training purposes. The Pirates Club was granted the use of the Carisbrook Grouhd for the season.
