MILTON NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, April 1. BOWLING. Milton Club brought its season to a termination this afternoon with a match between teams representing the Town and Bruce Woollen Mill employees. The weather was delightful,, and an enjoyable game resulted in victory for the Mill by eight points. The Ladies' Club will close its season on Wednesday afternoon, after which topdressing will be proceeded with. BRUCE COUNTY MAIN HIGHWAY. The most important problem confronting Bruce County Council for consideration at Tuesday's monthly meeting is whether to accept or reject a definite offer from the Main Highways Board for reconstruction of the main highway between Taieri Ferry bridge and the cross roads near Milburn store —a distance of about 10 miles. This is admittedly the worst portion of main highway in Bruce County. The council at its last meeting agreed to consider an offer for reconstruction on the basis of repayment at £4O per mile per annum for a stipulated number of years. CRICKET. The Milton Club officially closed _ its season this afternoon with a match against Lawrence on the latter's ground. The weather was glorious, and an enjoyable game resulted in favour of Lawrence by the narrow margin of two runs. The game was characterised by low scoring, smart" fielding and catches keeping the runs down. ' Batting first, Milton knocked up 68 runs, E. Olver (14), G. Sloane (10), and C. Coombe being the only double.-figure contributors. Mong (three for six) and Hancock (three for 18) were the most successful bowlers for Lawrence. Lawrence responded with 70 runs, the principal scorers being W. Cavanagh and R. Batchelor, with 19 runs each. H. Heads (three for seven) and W. Heads (two for one) secured the best bowling averages for Milton. BRUCE COUNTY RATING.
Responding to the request of a number of district farmers, the local branch of the Farmers' Union convened a meeting of Bruce County ratepayers to discuss the possibility of securing some reduction in the burden of rating for the current financial year. The meeting was held in the County Chambers last night, but only about 35 ratepayers attended. Amongst those present were Messrs D. M'Gregor, John Allison, and W. Moore, jun. (members of the County Council). Rating problems generally were discussed, including County Council, Power Board and Hospital Board rates. The necessity for some reduction was strongly urged in these times of low prices, when farmers are finding it extremely difficult to make ends meet. The condition of the main highway from Taieri ferry bridge to Clarksville was also strongly criticised., The county councillors pointed out that the council had no control over the Power Board rating or the Hospital Board levy, nor could special rates be reduced on loan moneys raised in long-past days by former councils. The burden of rating for loans raised in earlier days was an instance of "the sins of the fathers being visited upon the children unto the third and four generations." The council was effecting every economy possible with i view to reducing the general rate, but very slight hope was entertained of any reduction being effected. After two hours' discussion the meeting was concluded without any definite resolution being carried. Those present were evidently convinced that no benefit would be derived from a deputation waiting on the council.
