BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS ___; -<s» (From Ocjr Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, April 2. A highly successful rodeo was held in beautiful weather in Sinclair's paddock, fronting Charlotte street, yesterday afternoon. The attendance was large and tne takings, even at the low charges tor admission, were enough to lustily tne Clutha Football Club in holding the venture, the. first of its kind in Balclutha. The steer-riding was held after the horse and foot events, and in it the chief interest centred. The eight entrants acquitted themselves well, but the pa m went to Mr lan Watt, of Warepa, who was the only one to ride his , mount to a standstill,'all the others being thrown before they reached the decoys Inree riders were left in at the finish, viz.— I Watt, F. Young (Inch Clutha), and N. Fountain. The final resulted in a win for Watt, with Young and Fountain equal for second, and they divided the second and third prizes. Considerable amusement was furnished by the Trotting Derby in which the contestants rode draught horses, and the winner was presented with a mock gold cup. The placing* were: Duff 1, C Holgate 2, M. Hol"ate 3. Pony Trot (seven entries)—J. Faithful 1, G. Duff 2, Ken WiUocks 3. The foot races resulted: Mens 100 Yards (12 entries)—J. Cook 1, J. Stewart 2, H C. Anderson 3. Boys' Race—R. Maslin 1, W. Cooper 2, G. Park 3. Girls' Race—C. Barron 1, Thelma Park 2, D. Hodgkins 3. Young Ladies' Race (eight entries)—Miss Jean Gold and Miss Janet Walls (equal) 1, Miss Esma Borthwick 3. Boys' Tyre Race; —I. M'Noe 1, G. Blair 2. L. Dimmock 3.
CRICKET. High School sent a cricket team to Owaka yesterday. Batting first, the School made 206 runs (Green 80, Gormack 40, and Guest 25). Wilson and Tabor were the most successful bowlers. Owaka replied, with 84 runs for six wickets, when 'an appeal against the light was upheld, the game thus ending in a draw. The six Owaka wickets were shared by Mulvey, Gormack, Guest, and James.
