GREYHOUND RACING
TOTALISATOR CLUBS ILLEGAL AN ALARMING DECISION. LONDON, December 16. The High Court declared illegal totalisator clubs at greyhound tracks. It ie estimated that £10,000,000 yearly is passing through the greyhound totalisators. Unless the decision is upset it means that only racecourse totalisators are legal. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, December 17. (Received Dec. 17, at 5.5 p.m.) Considerable interest has been aroused by the judgment of the Lord Chief Justice, the effect of which is to render illegal the use of the totalisator on greyhound racing tracks, in which approximately £3,000,000 has been invested in recent years and which is patronised by huge numbers of the public. The shares of greyhound racing companies, the present value of which is estimated to be about £10,000,000 were marked down on the stock exchange this afternoon. The decision will probably also affect totalisator clubs, the number of which has been increasing rapidly in recent months and may reach 1000 in the whole of England. The judgment in this case is final, but the newspapers forecast that the matter will be taken to the House of Lords on another case now in the Chancery Court. The Commissioner of Police is understood to be considering the position arising from the judgment, in association with the Home Secretary. It is considered probable that steps will be taken to close down the totalisator clubs immediately. Greyhound race meetings are being held in several places tonight and according to the statement of the managers the totalisator will be in use.
