WAIKOUAITI NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, October 10. CATHOLIC CHURCH SOCIAL. There were 150 couples at the social held on Wednesday evening last under the auspices of the Catholic Church and organised by Mr Griffiths. Music was supplied by Ellison’s Dance Band, and songs by Mrs M. Taiaroa and Mr P. Toomy were much appreciated. There were several competitions, the winners being:—Log box, Mr P. Skinner, NorthEast Valley; cushion, Teeny Sband; tray cloth, Mrs Dave Malloch; lamp shade, Mr D. Lenahan; bag of sugar, Miss Chrissy White; bag of coal, Mr Patterson. Miss Ellison and Mr O’Rorke won the lucky one step, Miss Summers and Mr Ben Ward the waltzing competition, and Miss and Mr Jackson the lucky spot waltz. Mr Griffiths was M.C., and a Maori haka pleased the gathering greatly. LAWN TENNIS. The lawn tennis season here was opened on Saturday, and visitors from the neighbouring clubs of Palmerston and Shag Point were present in good numbers. Mr R. M. Templeton, the club president, “in his opening remarks, stressed the loss which lawn tennis in the district would suffer by the removal of Mr Sawyers, of Palmerston, to Waipawa, as he was not only a keen player himself but was an inspiration to young players and an ever ready worker in the interests of the sub-association, OUTBREAK OF FIRE. A fire broke out in the vicarage last Thursday afternoon, caused. It is believed, by sparks from a rubbish fire. By the aid of a home-made appliance the fire was put out by the vicar’s family and a workman. The local fire brigade with hose and reel was smartly on the spot.

PERSONAL. The doctors have not been able to locate the clot of blood which caused the serious and sudden illness of Mr Alick Murray a few days ago, and he is still under observation in the Stafford Street Hospital. THE WEATHER. A very welcome rain started about mid-day and looks like continuing.
