OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the executive of the Otago Cricket Association was held last night. The president (Mr J. Fraser) occupied the chair. LABOUR DAY MATCHES. The Carisbrook Club applied for permission to send its senior eleven to Oamaru to play either North Otago or the Oamaru Club on Labour Day. The chairman said that this match might interfere with the game between Otago and the. combined North OtagoSouthland team, which it was intended to hold on the same day. No reply ha'd been received from the North Otago and Southland Associations to the Otago Association’s letter suggesting the match, Mr A. Regan said that if the match did not eventuate a round of First Grade matches should be played. Mr W. Strang said that he thought that more good would be done for the game if city teams played matches against country clubs on Labour Day. The convener of the Grounds Committee (Mr E, H, Ferguson) said that it would not be posible to have the wickets prepared for matches on Labour Day. The wickets would be in use on the previous Saturday, and it would not be fair to ask a groundsman to have them all ready for pluy again two days later. In addition, so much use might damage the wickets at such an early stage of the season.

The Carisbrook Club was granted permission to travel. . On the motion of Mr Strang it was decided that if the match between Otago and the North Otago-Southland team did not eventuate a match would be played between a team of colts led by Badcock and an Otago eleven, Badcock to choose the colts in conjunction with the selectors. WICKETS AND FINANCE. A letter was received from the _ High School Old Boys’ Club stating that junior members of the club, especially those in the Second Grade B and Third Grade teams, were dissatisfied with the wickets on which they had played last season. It was suggested that in view of the miproved financial position of the association something might be done in the direction of providing better wickets. Mr A, W. Alloo said that the question of wickets had been a difficult one for years, but the Grounds Committee and the City Corporation were doing what they C °Mr D. A. Solomon said he thought that it should be made clear that, financially, the association was not in a good position. It would be serious if people were allowed to assume that because the association had received £IOOO for its coach fund it was in a sound position otherwise. He moved that the club be informed that the association appreciated the difficulty and was doing what it could to improve the position. At the same time the clubs must realise that the finances of the association were far from satisfactory. The motion was carried. SPECIAL OTAGO-WELLINGTON MATCH.

Mr Strang said that the suggestion had been made from Wellington that a special representative match between Wellington and Otago should be played at Dunedin on January 0,7, and 9. It was decided to invite the Wellington Association to play a match on those dates on the usual Plunket Shield terms. SENIOR COMPETITION. Entries for the senior competition were received from last season’s senior clubs, and the North-East Valley Club. On the motion of Mr Regan, seconded by Mr Dunning, it was decided that the eight teams which had played last season again form the competition. SENIOR-GRADE A COMPETITION. Eleven entries were received for the. Second Grade A competition, and Mr F. M. Hanan intimated that the University Club would be able to enter another team, so that a bye would be avoided. The Grade Committee was asked to report on a proposal that the Second Grade A competition, which will be opened on October 29, should be divided into two sections. ■ ,

KAIKORAI TEAM TO HAVE COACH. The University Club applied for the services of the coach as a member of its senior team during the season. The annual meeting has recommended that tbe coach play with tbe Kaikorai Club. In support of the University Club’s application, Mr Hanan said that it was felt that the coach could do a great deal in the direction of improving the play of the young members of the side. The club was diffident in making the application, as Kaikorai was the weakest team in the competition and required the coach’s services, The constitution of the University Club allowed only students and graduates to play in its teams, but this difficulty, it was thought, could be overcome. In reply J;o a question, Mr Hanan added that it was the policy of the club to build up the senior team from students and graduates resident in Dunedin. , Mr W. Brookes moved that tbe coach be allotted to the University Club, since it .was the policy of the association to develop the best material offering. Mr Hanan seconded the motion. # Mr G. A. Martin said that the Kaikorai team was keen and was “whole heartedly for cricket.” Under Badcock it would make a much better showing. Mr Strang also expressed the opinion that Badcock should play for Kaikorai. He added that the side badly needed a leader.

Mr P. Bundle saked whether the question was to be decided on sentiment or on the grounds of utility. It seemed that the greatest benefit would be obtained if Badcock played for University, but that Kaikorai had to be helped to win matches. That principle was wrong. Mr Alloo suggested that Mr Rundlc was “slightly astray” in his remarks. Badcock would play for the team only on Saturdays, and not a great deal of coaching was done while the game was in progress. , Mr Brookes disagreed with Mr Alloo s remarks, and stated that Badcock did a great deal of coaching during games. The motion was lost, and it was decided that the coach should play with the Kaikorai Club. METHOD OF COACHING.

The chairman said that it was his considered opinion that the association did not make the best use of the coach. He was inclined to agree that sentiment had been allowed to over-ride judgment. It was not open to argument that the best arrangement would be for Badcock to play with a team of colts. He was sure that such a plan would give more results in two years than the present method would give in five or six. He would see that a team of colts was found next year even - if it meant pushing a team out of the competition. A member: Eastman was given a team of colts. The chairman said that the position with respect to Eastman’s team had been a scandal. Members expressed agreement with the chairman’s remarks with respect to the formation of a colts’ team. The chairman: And we have not tho courage to do it. . , , , Mr Binney said that the clubs had stated that they would not weaken their senior teams by giving up their colts. The matter had been taken out ot the association’s hands. ' The chairman: When it is done the association will pick the team. COACHING ARRANGEMENTS. Mr Martin, on behalf of the Coach Committee, submitted the following programme for coaching during the season: Primary School Boys.—Monday, 3.15 to 4.30, at Logan Park; Saturday, 9 to 11. at the Oval. High School.— Monday to Thursday, 12.15 to 1.45. m „ M'Glashan College. —Tuesday, 3.30 to 4.30, at Logan Park; Wednesday, 2 to 4.30, at Carisbrook, , mi Christian Brothers School.—Thursday, 3 to 4.30, at Carisbrook; Friday, 3 to 4.30, at Carisbrook. Colts.—At Logan Park from 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at Carisbrook from 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The following conditions were suggested:—“Colts to attend at least three times a week. Excuses to be valid ones. Conch to submit attendance reports to Coaching Committee. Colts to lie under 21.”

The programme was adopted. A request was received from the Mosgiel Club that the coach visit Mosgiel

one night a fortnight. The club would pay all expenses. , , . Mr Martin said that from what he had beard he did not think that the arrangements for coaching at the north end would be a success, although he hoped very much that they would be. we thought that good results would be obtained if the conch were free one night each week to visit the clubs. He moved that a reply be sent that the coach s tune at present was fully occupied, but tnai if an opportunity later arose he would be sent to Mosgiel. The motion was carried. GENERAL. A letter was received from the South Otago Association asking that an Otago eleven, including Badcock, should be sent to South Otago during the season.—lt was decided to inform the South Otago Association that an endeavour would be made to arrange a match later ,1® the season. . 1 . , « The Auckland Association suggested cember 31 and January 2, 3. and i«s the dates of the Otago-Auckland Plunket Shield match.—The dates were approved.
