DUTCH SEAMEN'S UNION
THREAT TO GALL STRIKE TROUBLE OVER EXCHANGE. AMSTERDAM, August 29. (Received August 29, at 11 p.m.) A strike of seamen is threatened owing to the shipowners':,exploitation of sterling exchange. One firm, owing to its losses,: tried to induce its employees to apcept a reduction of: wages, but thfe Seamen's Union refused to do so. The firm thereupon sold. its ships to an English firm, who rechartcred them, manned by British seamen, as it is cheaper to pay British seamen sterling than Dutchmen florins. .. >,' The Dutch Seamen's Union threatens to,call a strike of all Rotterdam seamen unless the firm reverts to the former position.
