THE COTTON DISPUTE
NEGOTIATIONS BREAK DOWN UNIONS ORDER STRIKE (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.). (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, August 27. , (Received August 28, at 5.5 p.m.) The negotiations at Manchester in connection with the cotton dispute broke down last night. The trade unions ordered the operative to act upon the strike notices, but a complete stoppage is not expected, and it is probable that in Ashton, Stalybridge, Hyde, Radcliffe, Manchester, Todmordan, Rochdale, and Oldham, where a temporary working agreement is operating, there will be little, if any, response to the strike call. In a number of other districts the re-' sponse is. likely to be incomplete, but at present it is impossible ,to estimate the extent of the stoppage.. . The Minister for Labour states that intervention on' his part at the present stage would not be useful. TRAGIC FOLLY OF DISPUTE. ;— ' LONDON, August 29. (Received August 29, at 9 p.m.) The newspapers denounce the tragic folly of the cotton dispute, of which there is no prospect of immediate settlement. A further 200,000 operatives /ill shortly be idle if the present situation continues. THE INDUSTRY IN ITALY. , . WAGE CUT ACCEPTED. ' ROME, August 29.' (Received August 29, at 9 p.m.) The cotton industry has accepted a 10 per cent, wage cut, which will affect all but the minimum wage earners. The agreement is welcomed as a triumph for the Fascist policy, which, while forbidding strikes, safeguards lower paid workers at a time'when the cotton industry in other, countries is paralysed by strikes.
