TRADESMEN’S TOKENS
TO THE EDITOR.
■ Sir. — I have been very interested in the reports in your paper recently of old and rare coins, which are in possession of your readers. I have a collection of over two hundred coins, including over thirty New Zealand tradesmen’s tokens. I have also a. descriptive catalogue of Australian and New Zealand tradesmen’s tokens, published in London in 1883 by C. W. Stainsfield. According to this 74-page catalogue, nine halfpenny and forty-nine penny tokens were issued by New Zealand firms. The number must exceed this, as tokens were still being issued when the catalogue was printed, and I myself have one token that is not catalogued. Five tokens are listed as having been issued by Dunedin firms. I have one of these only—that issued by Day and Melville, merchants. — I am,, etc., Bernard Teague. Cromwell, August 25.
