DUNEDIN MARKETS WHEAT, OATS, ETC. The chief interest in the milling market during the week has been centred in the quota of Australian wheat for the local market, landed ex the Kaikorai, and deliveries of which are still being taken from the wharf. Local millers state that the sample is a very fine one and that they are well satisfied with the quality. Growers of wheat in Otago have now apparently sold all their lines, but odd lots are still being offered from Canterbury. Most of the wheat in this district is sown in the autumn, but spring sowing is now proceeding apace. The supply of fowl wheat locally is a little more than equal to the demand. What surplus there is in Dunedin is mostly being shipped to the North Island at slightly under the rates ruling in Canterbury. Local prices remain unchanged at 4s 6d per bushel, sacks extra, ex the store.

Millers’ prices for flour, etc., are as follow:—

Flour: 2001 b, £l4 2s; 100’s, £ls 2s; 50’s, £ls 7s; 25’s, £ls 17s. Bran, £5 per ton. Pollard, £7 per ton. Oatmeal: 2001 b, £2l; 25’s, £23. Little business has been transacted during the week in either grade or feed oats, and although prices remain steady on account of the small stocks held locally, there is a tendency for values to ease on shipments from the Bluff. Odd lines of feed oats are finding their way to North Otago, and there is also a demand from South Canterbury for truck lots of heavy Gartons suitable for seed. The current shipping price is 3s 7d per bushel, f.0.b., s.i., Dunedin, for A Grade, and 3s 3d for B’s. These prices are equivalent to 2s 9d and 2s Cd respectively, on trucks, in the country, sacks extra. There has been a disappointing demand from the North Island for Dun oats, and, whereas in past years a premium of 3d per bushel on A grade Gartons has been paid for good dark Duns, values recently have receded to practically the level for B grade. The cutting of chaff has been more general this month, and supplies are equal to all requirements with no change in prices. For lines ex the store good quality is worth £5 per ton, sacks extra, and lines on trucks are realising £4 10s. The Waipiata left the Bluff with over 3000 sacks of potatoes at the end of last •week, and then picked up supplies at this port, and with the tubers loaded at Timaru and Lyttelton she should have a large quantity for the North Island market. Few lines are now coming to the market from Otago growers, and the bulk of the crops appear to have been placed. A large proportion of the supplies for the local market during the week have been drawn from Southland. The quality of these tubers, taking them all round, is particularly good. Truck lots are worth £5 10s per ton, sacks included, ex rail, Dunedin,

Wholesale seed merchants are now experiencing more inquiry from those with a distributing trade in the country, but, ou the other hand, there is an entire absence of demand from overseas. Inquiries are also being received from the North Island, and it is apparent that stocks of many of the lines usually most in demand, such as cowgrass, white clover, and ryegrass, are not in excess of requirements. Wholesale prices are as follow: — Chaff: Good quality, to 15 per ton, ex store; on truck, £4 10s per ton. Potatoes, £5 10s per ton, ex store. • Dairy butter: Milled bulk, 9d per lb; separator, 9d. i Bacon, 9Jd per lb. Ham: Ordinary, lOd; boneless, lid per lb. Onions: Japanese, 30s per crate. Eggs: Stamped, Is; case, lid. . Eggs were reduced 2d per dozen during til 6 WCfillk. Supplies of Japanese onions are almost finished. , , , Supplies of dairy butter are wanted.

FRUIT REPORT. ' Supplies of apples are getting into short compass. The demand is practically confined to choice lines, Victorian-grown oranges are now sold out of the marts. A line of Island grown, transhipped ex the mail steamer Makura, arrived during the week. The fruit was in moderate condition only. . A few hundred eases of Rarotongangrown bananas arrived by the Makura and also a line of Californian grapes. _ Australian-grown lemons are unobtainable at present, but New Zealand-grown are available. . , The next supply of Australian-grown lemons is due early in September. Reports indicate that higher prices will be ruling for the lemons and also for Aus-tralian-grown oranges and mandarins. Cabbages, cauliflowers, and lettuce are the only vegetables meeting with a demand. . , „ Wholesale prices are as follow: — Apples; Sturmers, small 3s 6d to _4s per case; medium, 4s fid to 5s fid; choice, to 7s; Delicious, 4s to 7s; Jonathans, 3s 6d to ss; cookers, 3s to ss.
