WINTER SPORTS

SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS LARGE GATHERING AT HERMITAGE. (Per United Press Association.) THE HERMITAGE, August 26. About 90 competitors are quartered at the Ball Hut for the South Island interclub ski meeting which, opened on a slope near the hut tp-day. The meeting is considered to be the. largest yet held in; the South Island, being representative of the four principal winter sports clubs. After ideal conditions early in the week the weather broke last night, a strong wind and rain being in evidence. Consequently a slight thaw this , morning made the snow sticky, necessitating a change in the programme, and the downhill event was postponed till conditions improve. Results:— Men’s Slalom—Tasman Ski Club, 100 points, 1; Canterbury Winter Sports Club, 81.12 points, 2; Christchurch Ski Club, 73.80 points, 3. Ladies’ Slalom.—Christchurch Ski Club, 100 points, 1; Tasman-Aorangi ; combined, .66.55 points, 2; Canterbury Winter Sports Club, 00.90 points, 3. Cross-country Seven Miles.—Tasman Club, 100 points, 1; Christchurch Ski Club, 86.36 points, >.2; Canterbury Winter Sports Club, 80.28 points, 3; Aorangi Ski Club, 82.59 points, 4. The chief event of the day was the Seven Mile Cross-country Race. The course ran from the Ball Glacier past the Hochstetter Ice Falla to a point near the Ball Hut. Soft snow made the going slow, and the uphill stretch told on the competitors. Mahon, Elworthy, and Bryant took the lead over the first mile, but Page went to the front on an uphill stretch, and held the advantage to the four-mile post. Coming down the flat, Mahon took command, and, followed by Elworthy, established a good lead, which they maintained to the finish, Mahon winning by 20 yards. Bryant was about 300 yards back, and Murray was a simliar distance away. The Tasman Club got the first four men home to gain an easy win. Points are allotted on the aggregate time of four men. AORANGI CHAMPIONSHIPS. A party of Australian skiers will arrive at The Hermitage, Mount Cook, on Sunday, August 28, in time for the Aorangi Championships, and will compete against New Zealand’s best exponents of the sport.
