BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS

SOUTH OTAGO

(Fkom Odr Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, August 25, PERSONAL.

Prior to taking his departure from Waitepeka, where he has been school teacher for , the past seven years, Mr J. H. Pennycook, who will be remembered as a former Otago University footballer, was entertained at a social in Somerville’s barn, and was made the recipient of several presentations. The chairman, Mr J. I. G. Somerville, on behalf of the School Committee and the Lawn Tennis Club, presented Mr Pennycook with a handsome travelling rug, and Mrs Pennycook received a Bible in recognition of her services as organist in the church. From the school pupils Mr Pennycook received a fountain pen and pencil, while_ little Rosemary Pennycook was the recipient of a workbox. Mr Pennycook will go to Timaru, where he has been appointed to the staff of the Timaru Main School. POWER BOARD HEADQUARTERS.

A committee from the Otago Power Board visited ' Balclutha and consulted, with the Mayor and several citizens on the subject of shifting the headquarters of the board from Dunedin to either Milton or Balclutha. Mr C. R. Smith (a member of the Power Board) made the statement that while £ majority of the board could be got to vote for Milton as the centre, it would _be impossible to get a majority in favour of Balclutha. He therefore appealed to the Balclutha people not to divide the board on the subject, and so prevent the office going to Milton — a step which he l considered would be a very economical one. The matter, it i fi understood, will be decided at the next meeting of the Power Board. WHITEBAIT RUNNING.

Small quantities of whitebait have been caught in the tidal waters of the Molyneux at Kaitangata, but so far they have .not come up the river to Balclutha in any 'numbers.
