PIG HUNTING

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I see in your issue of the 12th inst. that pig hunting is a popular pastime on the Coromandel Peninsula, and that a pair of tusks 17 inches long was obtained there. The hunters declared that the tusks are the biggest they have ever seen. In 1925 I was pig hunting for my living on the Whalesback Station, Waiau. I killed close on 700 pigs for 6d per head. The largest pair of tusks I got was 19£ inches, and they were bought from me by Captain Henry Cooper, from Taranaki, and were placed by him in a museum in London, In 1927 I was hunting pigs on Mendip Hills, Parnassus. 1 was engaged on contract, and my tally for six weeks was 428 pigs. I often got tusks ranging from 15 to 17 inches.—l am, etc., W. J. L. August 12.
