MAJESTIC PICTURES The main attraction at the Majestic Theatre to-night and Wednesday is “ Her Majesty Love,” featuring Marilyn Miller and Ben Lyon. One of the most entertaining comedies seen in Oamaru for many months, “ Her Majesty Love ” has a strong cast of accomplished actors such as Leon Errol, Ford Sterling, Chester Conklin, and W. C. Fields, all thoroughly experienced in comedy roles. The story begins with a wager by Ben Lyons that he will conquer the heart of. the aloof barmaid of a Berlin cabaret. An unusual and highly diverting climax is evolved. The supporting pictures are of a varied character. ' The box plans are at the theatre and the Bristol. POULTRY SHOW Excellent entries have been received for the Oamaru Poultry Society’s annual show to be held in the Drill Hall on Friday and Saturday. In the poultry and pigeon sections about 520 entries have been received, while the entries in the needlework number over 200. KAKANUI SCHOOL COMMITTEE The weekly euchre tournament was held under the auspices of the Kakanui School Committee in the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday evening, when a large number of enthusiasts spent a most enjoyable time together. The lady’s prize was -won by Mrs Love, and the men’s prize by Mr J. Leen. The lucky table prizes were secured by Miss Duncan and Mr J. Love. LADIES’/TRAMPING CLUB Fifteen members of the Oamaru Ladies’ Tramping Club met at the Post Office on Saturday' for the weekly tramp. They went up Wharf street, through South Oamaru past the golf links, and on to the beach road. They followed this road until they came to the Awamoa road extension, when they turned to the right and boiled the billy. After tea they set out for home through Awamoa and down Severn street, covering in all a distance of about eight miles. UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held yesterday morning, the Mayor (Mr J. M. Forrester) presiding. The Relief Workers’ Committee advised that at a largely attended meeting of unemployed a resolution was carried by 75 per cent, of a majority that unemployed workers of North Otago prefer the No. 5 scheme with the stand-down week to the new scheme without the standdown week and 10s per day. Mr M‘Gregor's action in withdrawing the Unemployment Board’s subsidy from a Waitaki South farmer was approved. A deputation of single men comprising Messrs G. R. Schiffer, J. Slaven. R. R. Hunter, H. Gordon, introduced by Mr A. F. Stock (secretary of the Relief Workers’ Association), attended the meeting and entered a protest against single men not receiving any work. The deputation stated its case, and after retiring the committee resolved that Mr M‘Gregor carry on with the policy that he had adopted since the inception of the scheme; that was to allocate work to the best of his ability with the funds available. The following applications from farmers were approved under scheme 4a:—Kakanui, one man, wages 5s a week; Weston, one man, 10s a week; Enfield, one man, 10s a week; Hillgrove, two men, 5s each a week; Enfield, two men, 5s each; Ardgowan, two men: Weston, one man, no wages; Queen's Flat, one man, ss; Waiareka, one man, no wages: Omarama, one man, ss; Herbert, one man, 2s Cd (suggest 5s be offered). LABOUR PARTY During his tour, Mr W. Jordan, member of Parliament for Manukau and president of the New Zealand Labour Party, addressed well-attended meetings at Duntroon on Saturday flight, Waitaki Hydro on Sunday afternoon, Kurow on Sunday night, and at St. Luke’s Hall, Oamaru, last night. The speaker _ was well received at the various districts. He dealt with the legislation of the emergency session, and put forward his reasons why the Government should be called on to resign, his speeches being on similar lines to those delivered in the south. WOMEN’S DIVISION, FARMERS’ UNION A -well-attended meeting of Kia Ora ladies was held for the purpose of forming a branch of the Womens DrvTsionof the Farmers’ Union in that district. Mrs R. Meek (president of the North Otago Division) presided, and explained the aims and objects of the division. It was unanimously decided to form a branch at Kia Ora, and a committee was elected as follows:- —President, Mrs A. Durward; vice-presidents, Mesdames Searle and M‘Lea; secretary and treasurer, Miss R. Allan. It was decided to meet on the second Saturday of each month. VISIT TO HOSPITAL A very enjoyable concert programme was rendered by the Oamaru Regimental Band, under tbe baton of Lieutenant G. M. Whale, at the Oamaru Public Hospital on Sunday afternoon. The various numbers were much appreciated by the patients and the staff, and also the visitors to the hospital. OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB Mr J. R. Mitchell presided at a meeting of the committee of the Oamaru Jockey Club. The Southland Racing Club advised that it had lodged another objection this year against the club being granted January 3, 1933. The secretary (Mr D. V. G. Smith) was appointed to represent the club at the hearing of the objection before the Dates Committee of the Racing Conference, which will meet in Wellington on July 11. It was decided that the delegates of the district racing clubs to the,annual meeting of the Racing Conference be asked to support the remits providing for two dividends in- a race with five starters only, and also permittine it to be optional for a club to pay out three dividends where the number of starters in a race exceeds nine, the division of the dividends being on the basis of 70 per cent, for first, 20 per cent, for second, and 10 per cent, for third. MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS' ✓ The stock slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs during June consisted of 166 cattle, 1037 sheep, and 5 lambs. NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION The fortnightly meeting of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night, Mr W. Atkinson (president) occupying tbe chair. , The Golden Bay Union confirmed the guarantee of a £2O gate for a match at Takaka. The following regradings were approved:—Old Boys seniors to juniors, V. Dennison and Ludeman. Transfers granted:—S. C. Ashton, Kurow to Athletic; J. P: Rutherford, Duntroon to Maheno. The New Zealand Union wrote that according to the North Otago rules Veitch was eligible to play for a town club, but that the New Zealand Committee was of tbe opinion that the ■ rules should be revised to meet such cases. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the Waitaki Sub-union, and the reference to a revision of the rules was referred to the Rules Committee for a report to the Management Committee. At the request of the Relief Workers Association it was decided to issue unemployed passes to matches through A. F. Stock. , _ . The offer of a match between the South Canterbury primary schools’ representatives and the Waitaki Junior High School as a curtain-raiser on July 16 was accepted. The manager (Mr A. Young) reported on the trip to Ashburton, commending the behaviour of the players and expressing appreciation of the hospitality extended to the team. The secretary was instructed to write to the Ashburton Union and to Mr Gass returning thanks for the hospitality extended to the players. RAINFALL AT HILLGROVE The rainfall recorded at "Te Awa,” Hillgrove, by Mr W. S. D. Trotter tor the month of June was 83 points. The dry weather conditions have been in favour of stock. OAMARU FIRE BRIGADE The monthly meeting of the Oamaru Fire Brigade was held last night. Superintendent T. Herron presided over a large attendance of members. The United Fire Brigades’ Association forwarded a circular outlining various rules and regulations revised at the annual conference, and also the annual report.—Received. Accounts totalling £3 6s 2d were passed for payment. Two honorary members were elected, and one active member. The annual meeting was subsequently held. In his remarks Superintendent Herron stated that the balance sheet showed the brigade to be in a very satisfactory position. The credit balance was not so’ good as last year, but the expenditure had been fairly heavy. The brigade was fortunate in having such energetic and capable secretary in Deputy-superin-tendent Hinkley. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year; —Treasurer, Superintendent T. Herron; secretary, Deputy-super-intendent R. G. Hinkley; honorary sur-

A social evening was then held during which the badges and certificates were presented to the members in accordance with the number of years of service rendered to the brigade. , ' OAMARU BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY A meeting of the Oamaru Beautifying Society was held last night to consider a method of raising; funds. Dr A. Douglas presided over a good attendance of members. The secretary stated that £SB 10s had been received from various contributors, and with the balance from last year, made a total of £94 13s 2d for expenditure on improvements.. Various suggestions were put forward and discussed. It was decided to allocate £lO for replacements of trees about .the town. It was agreed that native shrubs be planted in Dee street from Reed street to Warren street; poplars in the eastern side of Tyne street and on the western boundary at King George’s Park, and tamarist trees in Wansbeck street, from* Wharfe to Ure street. A sub-committee consisting Dr Douglas and Messrs R. Milligan',..J. Robertson, and Lee .was set up to carry out the suggestions regarding, the planting of trees approved by tha committee; Mr G. Mitchell suggested that the society should approach the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and offer some assistance in the planting of trees at the Show Grounds, and induce it' to carry out this improvement. No doubt a good deal could be done in the w’ay of supplying suitable trees for shelter, which was greatly needed there. The matter, however, was allowed to lapse. OAMARU ATHEN/EUM COM- ‘ MITTEE The monthly meeting of the Oaiparu Athenamm Committee was held last night. Mr J. Simpson (president) occupied the chair. The librarian reported that 35 books of fiction had been placed in circulation. Fourteen adults joined the library during the month, and four left; two juveniles joined and one left. The roll of subscribers stood at 408, and juveniles 88; making a total of 496, Books issued were-Fiction 2766, magazines 1477, general 53, travel 38, science 23, history 23, biography 18, poetry 10, theology 6;total, 4414. Twenty-six volumes recommended by the Book Conjmittee were placed on the library shelves. Accounts totalling, £29 X4s, 6d were passed for payment. Messrs Wilson and, Woodgate were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. PHCENIX BOWLING CLUB The annual social and presentation of trophies of the Phoenix- Bowling Club was held last night at the club pavilion. There was a large .attendance, the early part of the evening being devoted to a euchre tournament, at which the. winners were Mrs Berry and Mr J. T. Adams, and Mrs Calder and Mr F. Simkin. Mr R. Jackson delighted those present with his playing of banjo solos, an'd Mr Allan Young contributed an elocutionary number and humorous stories. Mr A. J. Robertson (president), in presenting the trophies, reviewed the club s activities during the past season, and referred to the good sporting spirit which prevailed in the competitions. He congratnlated the winners, and presented the trophies and certificates as follows: Club Rinks—Adams, J.' Mitchell, Watts, and Burry; Club Pairs, Bastings and Sim-, kin; Club Singles,. J. Wilson; Champion Rinks—E. Grenfell, Young, Panekhurst, and Dunbar; Champion Pairs—Slater and Adams; Champion Singles, J. Dum bar; runner-up (Mr Joe Reid’s trophy). J. T. Calder: champion of champions singles, J. Dunbar. The trophies won in the ladies’ section were then presented ;by : Mrs Thompson, who congratulated the winners on their success: —Club rinks—Mesdame? Forrest, Corlett, Wedderspoon - , and M'Lean; club pairs, Mesdames Aikenhead and Reid; club singles, Mrs Wedderspoon. On behalf of the North Otago Bowling Centre Mr H. Hay congratulated the.eluD on its record during the season, The «lub had missed winning the Mills trophy by three points only, but had won the Sidey Cup, presented anonymously for evening play to commemorate “ Sidey time. Members of the club had won the champion of champions singles and at- the Easter tournament the Oamaru champion pairs, and the Meadowbank rinks. The play had been in the best sporting spirit, and-it afforded him great pleasure to hand over the Sidey Cup to Mr A. G. Robertson, who suitably acknowledged the presentation, Supper was then Landed round by the ladies, and was greatly appreciated. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING The Oamaru Miniature Rifle Club hold a practice shoot last night. G. Doran won the Palliser Button with the highest score off the rifle.
