SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION

• MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE. ■ The Executive Committee of the South Island Motor Union met in Christchurch on Thursday evening. There were present: Messrs F. W. Johnston (president), R. H. Parker, W. L. Minson, W. R. Carey, J. S. Hawkes, F. W. Freeman, and P. K. Harman (secretary) Mr F. W. Furkert (chairman Of the Main Highways Board) wrote in reply to the union, stating that the elimination of the dust nuisance was behind the board’s advocacy of tarring and\ sealing work. In the board’s opinion, the cheapest and most effective way of dealing with the dust nuisance in this country was to seal the roads with tar or bitumenised materials. Two other methods were extensively used in America, namely, the use of light oils and calcium chloride. The cost of importation of these materials would be high, and it would entail an annua! operation. The Minister of Justice (Mr J. G. Cobbe) acknowledged the union’s letter urging that provision should be made in the Policy Offences Act to compel all slow-moving traffic to keep as near as practicable to the left-hand side of the road. It was intimated that the representations would receive consideration when any further amendment of the Act was contemplated.
