G. METHVEN AND CO., LTD.

Away back in 1886 the well-known firm of G. Methven and Co.„Ltd., brass founders and coppersmiths, was established ip a small shed at Caversham. The progress of the busihess has been such that the firm now has extensive factories, which cover an area of over three acres on the Anderson’s Bay road, Dunedin, and the works are looked upon as the largest and most up-to-date of their kind in Australia or New Zealand, undoubtedly comprising one of the most important secondary industries in this country. Methven’s have definitely shown that local enterprise, allied with the New Zealand artisan and mechanic, is'capable of producing goods equal to the world’s best. The slogan “ Methvenise ” is now known throughout the whole of New Zealand, and there are very few homes which have not a boiler frame, tap, copper boiler, or some other household convenience manufactured by Methvens, Ltd. At the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 a special display of Methvens, Ltd., was included in the New Zealand exhibit, and was awarded a certificate of honour. Recently Methven’s have been specialising on the new chromium plating ot taps, cocks, and similar fittings. A few of the other Methven specialties which have enjoyed great popularity in New Zealand homes are the Methven seamless copper (made from a single sheet of copper), Methven boiler frame, Methven domestic boiler, Methven copper circulator, Methven gas copper, Methven w.c. flashers (noiseless and automatic), Methven bathroom fixtures, Methven streamline taps. Industries such as this, being large employers of labour, are big factors in making for the country’s progress and prosperity.
