WOOING THE GODDESS OF SLEEP
PROMINENT DUNEDIN ENTER- . PRISE It is only within recent years that scientists have, been devoting attention to the effect of sleep—or the want of it l — tlie human body, and it is only now being adequately realised how essential is sound sleep to good, health and a full life. When it is considered that the individual who lives to 70 years of age spends 25 years of his life in sleep, the state of the bed and the nature of the sleep it promotes are very important factors in our lives. Ori some beds the mattress is rough and lumpy, the ticking worn and soiled with Usage/ and the filling far from pure and Senic; but. because it has been used t after night for years on <?nd, the sleeper lias become accustomed to its defects* yet no doubt he often wonders why he wakes tip in the morning sluggish, tired or with a headache. The mattress is to blame. Careful research has shown the type of mattress that is necessary for resting the body in a comfortable, natural posture* and for tempting that state of sleep which enables one to wake up “ fresh as a daisy ” even after a hard, strenuous day. With the enterprise and foresight characteristic of Dunedin manufacturers, Messrs Arthur Ellis and Co., Ltd., have been manufacturing and marketing throughout the South Island this modern style Of mattress, under the name “ Sleepwell.” The superior quality and construction of the “Sleepwell ” mattress arc being Widely* recognised, and the firm (low employs a large number of workers at theif factory in Kaikorai to meet the great demand for their products. The main features of “ Sleepwell ” mattresses are that they do not sag, yet, at the same time, they yield to the weight and shape of the body without causing Strain on any of the muscles or limbs—especially the back. The fillings used n)‘e all new and absolutely pure, the buttoning remains secure, and the tickings ai-e of the highest quality. It is not to be wondered at that such scientifically constructed and luxurious mattresses provide perfect rest, and produce that sound, natural slumber which renews strengtli and energy and is the secret of good health and longevity. Another great aid to sleep is warmth and comfort, and here again Messrs Arthur Ellis and Co., Ltd., have shown their ■ enterprise by . manufacturing “ Fairydown " Quilts, which, while exceptionally light in weight, keep one snug on the coldest nights. The down is washed in boiling water and sterilised before going into the quilts, while the patterns of the coverings, in art silk and other choice materials, delight the eye. The industry has assumed such’ large proportions that Messrs Arthur Ellis and Co,. Ltd., create their own colour effects, alid the materials are then made to their order by the manufacturers in Manchester, England. The results thus obtained are not only original, but provide for any conceivable colour scheme required. Messrs Arthur Ellis and Co., Ltd., are to be commended for their enterprise—it is one of the few industries of this nature in New Zealand—and the public will no doubt show its appreciation by encouraging the production of this scientific bedding.
