ALEX THOMPSON AND SON

“NEVER DOUBTED CLOUDS WOULD BREAK ” NEW INDUSTRIES. Launching out at the present time into a new industry would also eeem a rash act, and bordering on madness. Yet when times are blackest and business most difficult there arise opportunities, and the spur of necessity sharpens the outlook to see and to seize its chances. The golf bag making industry has been launched under most favourable auspices. We needed work, and our workers were keen to be kept on full time. We had all the materials, and only a few extras were required. Samples were made, and after a number of trials and failures bags Were made that were entirely acceptable to the trade. Orders were booked front? all over the Dominion, and now you will find that your sports outfitter can supply you and give you a wide range to select from. Extra plant has been added, and the very latest golf bag machine has been installed, the only one of its kiiyi in New Zealand, and, we believe, in Australia as well. This machine is a bit uncanny in its appearance, for it has a long, octopus-like arm, light, but very powerful, that reaches to the bottom of the bag and stitches with wonderful ease and neatness the thick canvas or leather on to the solid sole leather moulded bottom with the greatest of ease. You watch that slim, slight, steel needle stab through that thickness of canvas and leather with precision and power that is amazing. It would take a strong hammer stroke with an awl to do it, yet there they follow one for another with a quickness that is astonishing. Buyers and those who are interested are invited to see the result of its work. Additional plant has been added to improve the finish and increase the output in our leather coat trade and various other leather garments. Aeronauts can have their wants supplied in helmets and coats, as we have greatly extended this branch of the business. Golfers’ jackets, wi|h the latest Zipp fasteners, are also being made in the most suitable materials of gaberdine and silk-weight japaras in our own factory. ALEX. THOMPSON & SON.
